An EPG and EMA study of apicals in stressed and unstressed position in Arrernte

چکیده
We present EPG (electropalatography) and EMA (electro-magnetic articulometry) data from two female speakers of Arrernte, a language of Central Australia. We focus on the apical consonants /t/ and /ʈ/, both of which have previously been shown to have a higher spectral centre of gravity for the stop burst when preceding a stressed syllable. Articulatory results suggest that the tongue is most retracted for the retroflex in the weak (i.e. unstressed) context, but that both apicals have a more advanced tongue position in strong (i.e. stressed) positions. In general, there is more variability in tongue-palate contact patterns for the alveolar /t/ than for the retroflex /ʈ/. In addition, jaw position is highest for /t/ in stressed position, and lowest for /ʈ/ in unstressed position. We suggest that the most prototypical retroflex is the one found in the weak prosodic position.

An Ultrasound Study of Alveolar and Retroflex Consonants in Arrernte: Stressed and Unstressed Syllables
This study presents ultrasound data from six female speakers of the Central Australian language Arrernte. We focus on the which may be considered phonemically marginal. We compare these sounds in stressed and unstressed position. Consistent with previous results on this apical contrast, we show that there are minimal differences between the retroflex and the alveolar at stop offset; however, at...
متن کاملA Preliminary Epg Study of Stop Consonants in Arrernte
The Australian Aboriginal language Arrernte has four coronal consonants in the stop, nasal and lateral series. This paper presents EPG data for the four coronal stops of Arrernte in inter-vocalic context for one female speaker of the language. Results show comparatively little variability in the laminal articulations, and comparatively greater variability in the apical articulations. An interes...

Abstract: This research has been carried out in the framework of Auto segmental-metrical (AM) phonology to study the stress in Persian. Two types of abstract and concrete prominences were distinguished in which the first one refers to the stress and the second one refers to the pitch accent. Stress is assumed to be a lexical property of the lexemes, but pitch accent is assumed to be an intonati...
متن کاملProduction of English Lexical Stress by Persian EFL Learners
This study examines the phonetic properties of lexical stress in English produced by Persian speakers learning English as a foreign language. The four most reliable phonetic correlates of English lexical stress, namely fundamental frequency, duration, intensity, and vowel quality were measured across Persian speakers’ production of the stressed and unstressed syllables of five English disyllabi...
متن کاملSpeech Clarity and Coarticulation in Modern Standard Arabic and Dialectal Arabic
This study deals with the co-variation of speech clarity and coarticulatory patterns. Two experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of two parameters on coarticulation, the speech style (formal vs. non formal) and the prosodic position (stressed vs. unstressed syllable). The speech material was composed of four word lists varying CV syllable contexts with pharyngealized / ...
